Tagore and Gandhi: the Way of the Artist and the Way of the Ascetic
The relationship between Tagore and Gandhi, with its blend of reverence and reproach, has often been commented on, with particular respect to their differences. But the relationship was actually a paradigmatic one, almost archetypal, with Tagore embodying the ideal of the way of the artist, while Gandhi stood for the equally honoured way of the ascetic. Their clashes were an inevitable result of two opposite ideals encountering one another.
