Irrigation needs and potentials in the Ilok Region

Like in the whole of Croatia, irrigation is insufficiently applied in the Ilok region. Analysis of the natural (climatic – pedological) conditions indicates that irrigation is required and that it is indispensable for a modern and diverse plant production. The existing natural conditions (soil and water) prove that there are great potentials for application of much more extensive irrigation. Irrigation is of particular importance for Slavonija and Baranja and its application should be stimulated also in this granary of Croatia, like it is in Dalmatia and istria. This naturally holds also for the Ilok region. It goes without saying that the development of irrigation must not be uncontrolled. To the contrary, its application should be adequately set up, scientifically and professionally analyzed and documented by designs, including the choice of the best method and system of irrigation. Other important factors include the selection of crop sequence, application of adequate technology, evaluation of water quality, as well as analysis of the potential effects of madequate irrigation upon the soil and crops grown. The methods and system of irrigation are chosen on the basis of the soil, croop grown, size and shape of production area, source and quality of water, as well as the goals of plant production. Surface irrigation systems have been mainly abandoned in the world and modern systems are being increasingly applied. Modern systems include sprinkling irrigation (various systems) and localized irrigation. Of special imporance are the new systems of drip irrigation and mini sprinklers, especially for woody crops (fruits and grapevine), like in the area of Ilok. These systems may be used on all soils, on every terrain, for all croops in field conditions and protected spaces (glass and plastic grenhouses). They consume little energy, save water and dose it precisely. Such modern systems enable maintenance of opotimal soil moisture and also addition of necessary plant nutrients during the growing season. All this provides conditions for an environment-friendly agriculture as well as steady high and good quality yields of agricultural crops.
