Grimm's Fairy Tales in the New Media
In the times of the new media (primarily computers, Internet, interactive stories, videogames) oral and written literature become the traditional media whereas the electronic literature is becoming the new media. This paper researches the process that the fairy tale “Snow White” underwent as being adapted into the electronic literature (videogame and interactive story) by analyzing the changes of its main features ; the firm narratological structure becomes discontinuous, the entrenched beginning (in medias res) and ending, as well as the continuous attributes, numbers and symbols are substituted with interactive and/or animated parts. These finalized solutions leave little space for children to be recipients and turn them into guided players (gameplay as one of the characteristics of the new media). The main loss in this process is in the area of characterization (polarized, unnamed characters) and the symbolism of the kalokagathia. Knowing the losses and gains of the newly made fairy tale, this paper also researches the difference in the children’s reception of the traditional fairy tale, as opposed to the fairy tale in the new media.
