Education of Rural Youth as the Factor of Exodus or Professionalization of Farming
This paper gives a survey of the socioprofessional mobility of rural youth in four representatively selected villages in Croatia, observed in the context of their formal education and of the choice of farming as a vocation. Selected settlements represented four rural regions in Croatia and they are divided according to the level of social and economic development. The first research was carried out in 1968, the second in 1978, then in 1988 and the last in 1998. The study covered four generations of rural youth born in the periods: 1943-1952 ; 1953-1962 ; 1963-1972 and 1973-1982 and included around four thousand of respondents. The authors continually observed schooling and employment of each member of all the generations individually. The first three generations have finished their formal education and definitively made a choice of vocation . Comparative analysis is based on sociodemographic characteristics of respondents such as age, sex, marital status, education attainment and type of school, vocation and professional origin of parents as well as differences among youth in the studied villages. The results suggested a large-scale schooling of rural youth, but also low interest for agricultural schools and farming as a vocation.
