Urbanism and Architecture

The basic sections of the urbanism and architecture of the Croatian part of the Roman province of Pannonia (southern Pannonia) are introduced and analysed on the basis of the archaeological material stemming mostly from the major towns, that is, the coloniae and municipia (Siscia, Mursa, Cibalae, Andautonia, Aquae Balissae and Iovia), as well as Aquae Iasae. The subject matter is covered against the background of urbanisation and communications, the formation of settlements, urban geography of the landscape, town areas and population, and components of urbanism and urban structure (urban matrix, public architecture such as town walls, forums with accompanying adjacencies, temples, baths, horrea, amphitheatres, theatres and stadiums, harbours, and residential architecture). The architecture of other urban settlements and the limes area is also touched upon.
