Studying lexical access in Croatian speakers of English as a foreign or second language: methodological issues
This paper deals with some methodological issues which need to be considered when studying the influence of orthographic specificity, cognates as well as the auditive and visual modality of presentation on lexical access times in Croatian speakers of English as a second or foreign language in monolingual and bilingual language modes. The partially overlapping alphabets of the Croatian and English languages are particularly appropriate for the purpose of investigating language selectivity of lexical access. Issues related to the description of subjects who are not bilingual are discussed and justification for studying them using the methodology developed for bilingual speakers is laid out. Lexical decision task is discussed as well as the factors which need to be paid attention to in stimulus design. These issues are addressed with respect to the Republic of Croatia as the language environment, the Croatian language, and Croatian speakers of English as a second of foreign language.
