Visual word recognition and language-specific orthographic cues: evidence in favour of language-nonselective lexical access in Croatian Speakers of Global English

This paper deals with the influence of language-specific orthographic cues on the selectiveness of lexical access in Croatian speakers of Global English. A group of Croatian students of English (levels C1 and C2 according to the CEFR) carried out a visual lexical decision task. Stimulus consisting of test words and pseudowords containing orthographic cues specific to one language and not existing in the other language was prepared. Control words and pseudowords used for the stimulus contained no language-specific cues and were carefully designed so as to match the test words in all other aspects (length, frequency, familiarity, neighborhood density) with the purpose of avoiding any unwanted influence of the control words’ characteristics on the results. No statistically significant difference between the test stimulus and the control stimulus was found, suggesting language-nonselective visual lexical access. Error analysis was carried out and differences were found between reaction times of the erroneous answers to the stimulus with and without language-specific orthographic cues in the categories of English words and pseudowords.
