On the Origins and Development of Information Sciences as an Academic and Research Field in Croatia

This paper traces the origins and development of the “Zagreb School of Information Sciences” during the second half of the 20th and the first decade of the 21st century. As an academic discipline, Information Sciences, in Croatia, and other ex-Yugoslavian countries, started in the early 1960's with a formal postgraduate educational program at the University of Zagreb for information professionals of various fields, in particular in science and medicine. Later in the same decade a postgraduate program in documentation, library science and museology was established through the visionary efforts of professor Božo Težak. The foundation of the first undergraduate program at the University in Zagreb in 1976/77 was another impetus for the development of the field, which was followed by the establishment of other undergraduate and graduate Library and Information Science (LIS) programs in other ex-Yugoslavian states. Since the first program in 1960's the connection of archival studies, librarianship, documentation and museology, have been encouraged. This demonstrates that the vision of Božo Težak could be interpreted as a valid foundation for interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary studies and research today, the quality of which does not only rely on ICT, but also on the investigation of information phenomena in the knowledge society from the point of view of other disciplines in the area of social sciences and humanities.
