The virtual business incubator: Innovative support for competitive SMEs
There is an increasing number of business incubators worldwide that were transformed from classic, real business incubators and evolved into completely virtual incubators that provide to their clients (which have now turned into virtual tenants) most or all incubation services on-line or by means of other virtual methods. In Croatia, despite an increasing demand for products and services that virtual incubators can provide, virtual incubation is still in the earliest stage of development. So, the main aims of this paper are to compare the activities undertaken, i.e. services rendered, by the classic with those offered by virtual incubators in order to discover how best to continue to assist the client firms to survive and grow, and to conceptualize the model of a virtual incubator to render business-support in Croatia. The conceptualization of the model of the hybrid type was based primarily on the experience of the Croatian business incubators and the well-known virtual incubators in other parts of the world. In this paper, four areas for upgrading with the web based technologies are identified and discussed: education and consulting, sales, financing, and cost reduction services.
