"Development of a Harmonized Waste Management System for Inland Navigation Along the Danube"

Despite the fact that a number of international and national documents discuss ship waste management on the Danube, the issue has yet to be brought under an internationally coordinated and comprehensive framework. This is why the project WANDA– Waste Management for Inland navigation on the Danube was initiated. Through their joint activities, the WANDA participants seek to solve the problem of realising ship-borne waste management in a coherent manner across all Danubian States. The main target of the project is the international harmonization of the currently uncoordinated and quite varied ship waste management regulations and practices in the Danube riparian countries. The main activities include the elaboration of an international ship waste management concept as well as harmonised national ship waste management concepts, the implementation of pilot actions for the collection and treatment of hazardous and other ship wastes along the Danube as well as the elaboration of a financing model for charging and refinancing the services of the waste management system. Development of a harmonized waste management system for inland navigation along the Danube comprises the most relevant results of this project with special attention to some national characteristics in the project partner countries represented by the authors (Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia and Romania).
