The association between fish bacterial populations and microbial water quality in two rivers under different antrophogenic influence

In the aquatic environment, hosts and microorganisms share same ecosystem where the properties of the bacteria in the ambient water are important for the development of the fish bacterial population. Problems in the aquatic environment are result of water pollution. Therefore is important water protection from anthropogenic influence, including deterioration of microbial water quality. From that reason, determined abundance of fish bacterial population and species diversity could provide particular information about exposure of aquatic environment to pollution. Aeromonas hydrophilla/caviae is ubiquitous in the aquatic ecosystem and a part of fish bacterial population. The aim of this study was to examine the association between fish bacterial population and microbial water quality in two Croatian rivers: Krka and Sava, under different anthropogenical influence. Specific aim was to investigate how microbial water quality influenced on the proportion of A. hydrophilla/caviae within fish bacterial populations. Microbial parameters (heterotrophic bacteria, Vibrio, coliforms, Escherichia coli, enterococci) were examined in the rivers, as well as determination of fish bacterial population on tryptic soy agar plates, with phenotypic characterisation. The Sava River is an ecosystem under high anthropogenic influence with several point sources of high pollution. In contrast, Krka River constitutes a less polluted and influenced ecosystem with only one point of pollution. Bacterial analysis indicated that bacterial population sizes were higher in fish from the Sava River (20 CFU/fish) related to the fish from Krka River (15 CFU/fish). Contribution of A. hydrophilla/caviae to the bacterial population assemblage was higher at not polluted river with more than 54% in realtion to poluted river (less than 26%). That indicate low tolerance of A. hydrophilla/caviae to polluted conditions. This study reveals the influence of microbial water quality on fish bacterial populations in anthropogenically influenced river and usefulness of A. hydrophilla/caviae as indicator in assesment of influance to aquatic environment.
