Parental psychopathology in children and adolescent with inflammatory bowel disease
OBJECTIVES: There is a lack of literature data regarding prevalence of personality disorder (PD) among parents of children and adolescent with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The aim of this study is assessing the rate of parents who fulfilled criteria for particular PD according Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis II Personality Disorders (SCID-II). METHODS: Participants were 36 parents of children and adolescent (age 7-18 year) with IBD. RESULTS: Half of the parents scored at or above the threshold for particular PD and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) were the most prevalent one. Among all parents, the most frequent OCPD criteria were inflexibility about morality and rigidity. DISCUSSION: Because this study is a cross-sectional we can’t say if the high prevalence of OCPD features in parents of children with IBD is a result of carrying for the child with chronic disease, maintaining or even precipitating factor in the context of paediatric IBD.
