The use of non-hormonal and hormonal methods and artificial insemination in dairy goat oestrus synchronization
This paper presents an overview of the reproductive and breeding management methods in highly productive dairy goat herds and all year round production demands and systems. The methods of herd reproduction control such as estrous synchronization during and out of breeding season, mating, artificial insemination (A.I.) and embryo production and transfer which allow genetic improvement of the flock, are described. All mentioned techniques require induction and synchronization of estrous by hormonal (vaginal sponges, prostaglandins) or non-hormonal methods (light treatment and male effect) and protocols. Non-hormonal methods and organic production can ensure sustainability of the goat industry from an economical and ecological perspective. Techniques for pregnancy detection are described as well (use of transabdominal and transrectal ultrasonic pregnancy diagnosis).
