Erythrocyte superoxide dismutase in children with bronchial obstruction
Free radicals are short life substances produced in normal biological processes or by environmental activity and are being destroyed by physiological radical-defence system. One of them is superoxide anion, product of many physiological and disease processes. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) decreases its toxicity as a part of antioxidant system. In order to measure catalytic activity of SOD in erythrocytes, we obtained blood samples from 32 children (15 girls and 17 boys, average age 9, 5+4, 7) with severe bronchial obstruction. The samples were divided into two groups: the first group contained blood samples taken from the children during the bronchial obstruction, whereas in the second group were blood samples taken five days after the medication with Salbutamol (Ventolin). Catalytic activity (U/mgHb) of SOD in erythrocytes in the group I was 0, 850+0, 334, and in the group II 0, 836+0, 364. Average increase of catalytic activity of SOD five days after treatment was 0, 204+0, 165 and its average decrease was similar 0, 206+0, 257. Since our results are not much changed by Salbutamol therapy, we determined the value of SOD in group of patients after treatment as being normal (0, 836 U/mg Hb). However, the value of SOD after Salbutamol therapy shows some differences considering the patients, sex and age.
