Effect of winery waste and tobacco waste mixture on composting performance

composting of waste mixture of exhausted grape marcs (GM) and tobacco waste (TW) in the laboratory scale packed bed reactor has been investigated in this work. Experiments were carried out in two thermally insulated reactors with working volumes of 1dm3 and 10dm3 and the substrate was forcefully aerated at the flow rate of 0.55dm3min-1kg-1 init.volat.solids. Three experiments were conducted in the 1dm3 reactor to examine effect of the GM:TW ratio in the starting mixture on composting performance. Composting substrates were prepared of 20, 37 and 55% of GM and the moisture content was set to 60%. Temperature of the composting mass was closely monitored and showed that thermophilic phase was reached only in the experiment with the highest ratio of grape marcs. Furthermore, in the experiment with 55% of GM the highest CO2 production of about 185gkg-1 init.volat.solids was obtained. The same mixture was used for composting experiment in the 10 dm3 reactor in order to further investigate the biodegradation of the given substrate. Temperature profile during 16 days of the process was similar to one obtained in 1dm3 reactor. During the process, pH-value, C/N ratio and volatile solids content of the composting mass were periodically determined. At the end of the process 56.6% of volatile solids were degraded and obtained pH-value and C/N ratio of the product were 8.8 and 13.6, respectively.
