Biological treatment of leachate generated from tobacco dust waste: experiments and kinetic analysis
Landfill leachate is defined as the aqueous effluent generated as a consequence of rainwater percolation through wastes, biochemical processes in waste's cells and the inherent water content of wastes themselves. Biological treatments are often used for the removal of the bulk of leachate with high chemical oxygen demand (COD) values primarily due to their higher reliability, simplicity and cost effectiveness of these processes. The aim of this work was to study the efficiency of biodegradation of organic pollutants in laboratory prepared leachate from tobacco dust waste under batch conditions using Pseudomonas aeruginosa FN. Toxicity test with Vibrio fischeri, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), COD, concentration of nicotine, pH value, dissolved oxygen (DO), and mixed liquor volatile suspended solids (MLVSS) have been monitored in experiment. The microscopic analysis was conducted to study the development of activated sludge flocs and its morphology. Leachate samples were found to be biodegradable and more than 72 % COD was removed.
