Antioxidant activity and polyphenolic content in two sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas L.) cultivars grown under different conditions.
Sweet potato is one of the world’s most important food crops, and lately there is a great starch, but its leaves have been largely neglected, except for occasional use as livestock feed. In recent years, several reports have indicated that phytochemicals in sweet potato display antioxidant activity and exerted several health-promoting functions in humans. We study total polyphenolic content and antioxidant activity in two different cultivars sweet potatoes: Bat1 (orange flesh) and Boniata (white flesh) grown in addition of Zeolit in the soil and FitoLife as foliar mineral fertilizer. Total polyphenols in leaves and roots of two sweet potatoes cultivars were determined using the Folin–Ciocalteau reagent while we used three methods for determination of antioxidant activities including ORAC, ABTS, and FRAP methods. In general, total polyphenolic content were higher in leaves then root in both cultivars, and Bat1 had higher content in leaves (24.55 mg/g dw) then Bonita (20.71 mg g-1 dw) while in root values were reverse (Bonita – 0.49 mg g-1 fw, Bat1 – 1.80 mg g-1 fw). We found negatively influence of Zeolit and Fitolife addition on total polyphenolic content in leaves as well as for Bonita roots while in Bat1 root we found increase of total polyphenols. In addition, total polyphenolic content were highly correlated with ORAC (R2=0.980), ABTS (R2=0.953) and FRAP (R2=0.969), and can serve as a useful indicator for the antioxidant activities of sweet potatoes.
