Epoxy-silica organic-inorganic hybrid textile materials and antibacterial activity

In this work epoxy-silica organic-inorganic hybrid cotton and polyester fabrics were prepared by sol-gel process with addition of AgNO3 and ZnO. Hybrid materials were prepared from diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) as organic precursor, and 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GLYMO) as inorganic precursor. The application of epoxy-silica organic inorganic hybrid films on cotton and polyester fabrics was performed by a dip-coating on a custom made apparatus with a defined drawing speed of 1 mm/s. Also, fabrics (cotton and polyester) have been treated with the neem oil as a natural ecofriendly agent. Neem oil is a vegetable oil pressed from the fruits and seeds of the neem (Azadirachta indica), an evergreen tree which is endemic to the Indian subcontinent. In this work antibacterial activity of neem oil applied on fabrics was studied. Additionally, prepared materials were studied by scanning electron microscopy and agar diffusion plate test (antibacterial activity). The antibacterial activity was studied by determining bacterial reduction of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Based on obtained results it can be concluded that good effect on gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria show treatments on cotton and polyester fabrics with the addition of AgNO3 with and without epoxy resin. Neem oil and treatment with ZnO did not show the expected effect i.e. the results were on the limit of efficacy. The retention of textile character as an important requirement of new textile materials was successfully met.
