Levels of chlorinated pesticides and PCBs in mussels from eastern Adriatic coastal waters (Croatia)

An evaluation of the contamination level in the eastern Adriatic coastal waters by chlorinated pesticides and PCBs was performed in 2011 using wild mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis. The general pattern of organochlorines (OCs) distribution was characterized by much higher PCBs concentrations in relation to chlorinated pesticides. Elevated contaminant concentrations were found in mussels collected from the areas with high input of industrial, harbor and urban wastewaters. Obtained concentrations were similar to those reported for the low to moderate polluted coastal areas. As regards the human health, all the values for PCBs and pesticides found in mussels were below the limits established for food by the Croatian legislation.
