Description of Stephos boettgerschnackae sp. nov., a new copepod (Calanoida, Stephidae) from an anchialine cave in the Adriatic Sea
A new copepod species, Stephos boettgerschnackae is collected from an anchialine cave in the Kvarner Region (Croatia). This is the first record of the genus Stephos found in the Adriatic Sea. The new species is distinguished from other Stephos spp. by a combination of the following features: genital double-somite of the female is asymmetrical in ventral view and is slightly longer than wide ; caudal rami are symmetrical, seta I absent ; the antennules of both sexes are symmetrical, 24-segmented and very long, reaching almost to the end of caudal rami ; segments 1 and 2 of male with enlarged aesthetascs proximally: the antennal exopod is 6-segmented ; the maxillule displays 14 armature elements on the praecoxal arthrite and the basal exite is unarmed ; the female fifth legs are symmetrical, uniramous and 3-segmented, the distal segment is armed with single small spine on proximal face, transverse comb of spinules at mid-length and distal part ornamented with marginal rows of spinules and proximal part with small spine ; the male fifth legs are uniramous and asymmetrically, right leg 4-segmented and left 5-segmented, segment 4 robust and segment 5 very complex.
