LET US LISTEN TO THE NON-HEARING! Faculty of Medicine (Rijeka, Croatia): A Friend of the Deaf

Let us listen to the non-hearing! project is aimed at the connecting and networking of single activities within the initiative named Faculty of Medicine (Rijeka, Croatia): A Friend of the Deaf. Departing from the first experiences with deaf patients (education of sign language, research, publications, etc.), Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka has recently been orienting toward the inclusion of the deaf into the system of higher education, with the goal of reducing and eliminating social barriers, as well as of increasing social integration of the deaf. Recent activities have resulted in establishing collaboration with the American Rochester Institute of Technology, and with initiating the foundation of the Croatian National Centre for Higher Education of the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing. It is planned to eliminate technical barriers, to secure stakeholders support, to gather target groups, to realise education process and employment support. Networking with European projects and dissemination of experiences will follow, especially onto the countries of the region. The project is planned to be particulary improved by the participation of local association of the deaf
