Low Fertility and Population Ageing in Croatia
Croatia, as almost all European countries, is experiencing long-term downtrends in fertility, and consequently, demographic ageing of population. The decrease in fertility and the increase in life expectancy in developed countries have raised three concerns for the future: the decrease in the labour supply, the social and economic implications of population aging, and the long term prospect of population decline and demise. According to age of its population, Croatia is rated at the 12th position in the world, and this high proportion of elderly threatens the solvency of pension and social insurance systems. With the decreasing of household size, the ability to care for the elderly diminishes. In the same time, elderly are facing growing health care needs and costs. Taken together, these developments could pose significant barriers to achieving economic growth.
