Internal corrosion root cause analysis by multiple-technique characterization of sludge obtained from crude oil pipeline
In the present study sludge analysis using multiple techniques has been found invaluable for superior interpretation of the corrosion attack found in the crude oil pipeline systems and for superior root cause analysis. We investigated sludge from the interior of the API 5L X52 steel crude oil pipeline sampled at the location where wall perforation due to corrosion has already occurred. The sludge sample was analysed by various techniques: FTIR, XRD and SEM-EDS. Bacterial analysis and chemical analysis of Cl- and SO42- content were also preformed. The applied techniques of analysis proved to be complementary yielding different information about the investigated samples. Results are specific to the corrosive action of biotic corrosive media and indicate bacterial activity and scale formation as the main root cause of the observed corrosion failure. Based on these findings synergistic beneficial cleaning program by biocide/corrosion inhibitor injections may be recommended.
