Selection of procedure for the treatment of wastewaters from sugar production
The aim of our investigation was to examine the aerobic and anaerobic treatment of the wastewaters from the processing of sugar beet at the Sugar factory of Osijek (Croatia). The investigation was carried out under laboratory conditions using aerobic and anaerobic activated sludge, as microbial inoculums. The selected parameters for the investigation were temperature, pH-value, dissolved oxygen, and concentration of the activated sludge and retention time. The activated sludge enriched with selected nitrificants strains Nitrosomonas europaea, Nitrosococcus mobilis and Nitrosovibrio tenuis was used as the inoculum for the investigation of the treatment of this wastewater. The process of oxidation and nitrification took place. On the basis of achieved results of the treatment of wastewater at the Sugar factory of Osijek, it is evident that the quality of effluent is able to satisfy the requirements of EU standards.
