Our windows to the world of cognitive linguistics: the motivation of the to someone's eyes constructions
Our aim was to find out what the motivation behind the expressions that use to someone’s eyes language construction as their constituent part. How do we as speakers of English perceive this motivation in order to understand the complex meanings of language constructions? In order to understand the motivation of the variety of to someone's eyes constructions it was important to notice semantic similarities among them. A corpus study was conducted on the basis of a random sample of 198 entries from the British National Corpus. The constructions were classified into four groups based on their semantic similarities.The study proved that the researched constructions are motivated by ICMs, conceptual metaphors, metonymies, conventional knowledge, the naive model of the eyes as well as the expert model of the eyes.
