Fruits of species of rhamnaceae family as a source of natural phenolic antioxidants
Natural antioxidants are intensely studied because of their multiple beneficial effects on the human organism. In this thesis the polyphenol content and antioxidant activity of eight fruits from species of family Rhamnaceae: R. alaternus L., R. orbiculatus Bornm, R. intermedius Steud. et Hohst, R. catharticus L., R. saxatilis Jacq., R. fallax Boiss., F. alnus Mill., F. rupestris (Scop.) Schur was investigated. The content of total polyphenols and flavonoids was determined spectrophotometrically. Antioxidant activity of the extracts has been determined by four different methods: total reducing power assay, radical scavenging activity, chelating activity and β-carotene-linoleic acid assay. All the extracts showed a relatively good antioxidant activity in the performed assays. As expected, antioxidant activity of the extracts depended greatly on its polyphenol content, which indicates that polyphenols are most likely responsible for the observed antioxidant activity.
