Usage of communication technology-mediated slang: A comparative study of American and Croatian university students
The effect of communication technology on language is a recent topic that sparked a number of debates. Seeing as the appearance of new words that first emerged online or in text messages is still a recent phenomenon, not many studies have been conducted to examine it, and most are focused on the English language. For the purpose of determining how much Croatian university students use such expressions in comparison with American university students, a research has been conducted by administering an online questionnaire that included Likert scale tasks, multiple-choice questions and open-ended ones that were also used to assess the students’ opinions on the matter. A brief overview of communication technology slang is given prior to the outline of the study conducted for the purposes of this thesis. In the overview, the author singles out cases of communication technology slang and gives a brief analysis of prior research and the different opinions regarding the impact it had (and continues to have) on the English and the Croatian language. Furthermore, several instances in languages other than English are given, demonstrating the extent of such slang. Students’ responses indicate that the usage of such slang in English and Croatian seems to be more confined and marginal than expected, with only a few forms being frequently used.
