Surface modification of carbon nanotubes by esterification and amidation reactions
Carbon nanotubes exhibit some extraordinary properties like large interfacial contact area, high stiffness and strength, great thermal and electrical conductivity. They are often combined with other materials in the hope of improving properties of the host material. Their high aspect ratio and low mass density make them great filers. In order to obtain mechanical improvements of the host material, homogenous dispensability and good interaction between filler and matric has to be achieved. Because of their sp2 hybridization, carbon nanotubes exhibit powerful van der Walls interaction and tend to agglomerate in bundles. For these reasons CNT are often functionalized by different groups which lower the attractive interactions or/and improve interactions with matrices. Nowadays there are many different procedures of functionalization used to accomplish previously stated goals. In this work we performed covalent modifications which include reactions of esterification and amidation on previously functionalized carboxylic multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT).
