DESIGN AND EXPERIMENTAL PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF A WIRELESS M2M NETWORK
The multi-technology approach is the theoretical focus of this thesis. It offers communication redundancy to enhance reliability and safety, and to meet different quality-of-service (QoS) requirements of mission control data. However, it introduces new complexity because a multitude of communication technologies have to be monitored and managed. The system has to autonomously make decisions which technology to use based on the observed network states and the communication requirements of messages that have to be delivered. This complexity can be hidden from the application layer by using a middleware-approach. In this case the communication middleware integrates monitoring, diagnosis and technology selection functions that are hidden from the application layer through a simple API that offers support for different types of traffic.
