GUJAVICA – IZVOR BIOLOŠKI AKTIVNIH MOLEKULA, LIJEK I HRANA

A b s t r a c t In this paper a group of proteases and glycolipoprotein G-90 from earthworms are described. The earthworms proteases are multicomponent. From different species more proteases have been obtained ; lumbrokinases, earthworm-tissue plasaminogen activator, biologically active glycoprotein complex. Earthworm serine proteases has been applied in several areas such as clinical treatment of cloting disorders, anti-tumor study, environmental protection and nutritional production. So far, the earthworm proteases have been used as an orally administered fibrinolytic agent to prevent and treat clotting deseases, myocardial infarction. Lumbrokinase, an enzyme derived from earthworm Lumbricus rubellus contains plasmin and plasminogen activator as well. Plasminogen activator is similar to the tissue plasminogen activator. According to medical reports, lumbrokinases dissolve clots, lower the fibrinogen levels, shows antiplatelet, antithrombotic activity, regulating hypercoagulation, and dissolve bacterial biofilms in chronic infections. Glycolipoprotein extract G-90 prepared from the tissue homogenate of the earthworm Eisenia foetida exhibit mitogenic, fibrinolytic, anticoagulative, adhesive and antibacterial properties, as well as antioxidative effect. It can stimulate the growth of fibroblasts and epithelial cells. Besides antibacterial shielding, surgical skin wounds treated with G-90 were protected from inflamation. G-90 shortened inflamatory process and accelerate the proliferative and maturation phase. Regeneration of an injured epidermis was stimulate by G-90. Long before discovered and studied, earthworms has been used in traditonal chinese medicine (dried and minced earthworms were called Earth Dragon). Earthworms have also been viewed as an important protein source.
