Protection of bronze by n-alkanoic acid
Bronze artefacts and historical objects are often placed in the proximity of sea. Cor-rosive action of sea water in urban coastal areas is intensified by the presence of pol-luting gases, such as NOX. The aim of this work is to examine the possibility of bronze protection in urban coastal areas by stearic acid, CH3(CH2)16COOH. Stearic acid is saturated fatty acid with an 18 carbon chain. Fatty acids are known for spon-taneous adsorption on metal oxides and formation of self-assembled monolayers. Studies were performed in a solution simulating corrosive conditions in urban coastal areas: 0.2 g/L NaNO3 + 0.2 g/L Na2CO3 + 0.2 g/L NaCl. Corrosion of bronze in absence and presence of stearic acid was examined by means of electrochemical methods: potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectros-copy. Results obtained show that stearic acid decreases the corrosion rate of bronze.
