Perception and evaluation of sudden loudness changes in urban soundscapes
In general, average loudness is considered to be the main factor determining the perception of soundscapes.Rather than average loudness, this paper deals with the perception of sudden and short loudness changes in soundscapes. Three characteristic soundscapes were recorded and reproduced to two groups of listeners: the test and control groups. A test group of listeners listened to soundscapes with sudden and short loudness changes and the control group of listeners listened to the same soundscapes, but with equalized average loudness over the entire length of the recording. In both cases average reproduced sound pressure level was relatively low 50 dB(A). Subjective tests of both groups showed there are differences in perception of the same soundscapes with different loudness distributions, and that these loudness changes influence the perception of certain soundscapes.
