DMFT Index in School Children 16 Years After the War

Objectives: Analysis of the impact of war and war time conditions to the status of the teeth by comparing the results of measurements carried out after the war (1997) and new measurements performed 14 years after the first survey (2011.). Methods: The study was performed in 2011. in Novi Travnik, Bosnia and Herzegovina, 14 years after the first study in the same two schools as in the first study. All school children age 6 and 12 in both schools were included in this study, after their parents signed informed consent for participation in the study. Total number of examinees was 179, and DMFT and SIC index were calculated. The children were examined by dental probe and a mirror while using the artificial light of a clinical lamp. The data collected were statistically processed with SPSS computer program. Results: New research, performed in 2011., showed a significant decline in DMFT index compared to previous research, both for the ages of 6 and 12 years. For the age 6, DMFT index in the first study was 12.07±4.20 and in the second 4.66±2.46. For the age 12, DMFT index in the first study was 9.00±4.16 and in the second 7.88± 4.06. New study also measured SIC index and only its value (10.7) was similar to the DMFT index values from the first study. Conclusions: War and war time living conditions are directly responsible for the poor DMFT status in the first study, because in the new study provided in peace time living conditions, there are much better DMFT status in both age populations.
