Rehabilitation Programme for the treatment of sensory integration (SI) dysfunction in children with attention deficit disorder (ADD)

Sensory integration (SI) is the way the brain and nervous system process information from the senses to form perceptions, and perform behaviors and learning. SI dysfunction occurs when the nervous system is unable to integrate sensory information smoothly. When this occurs sensory information is misinterpreted resulting in problems with perceptions, behaviors and learning. ADD and sensory integration have a lot of similarity or overlap. Core symptoms of attention deficit disorder such as impulsivity, inattention and hyperactivity underlie sensory integration problems as well. The aim of this poster is to present rehabilitation program particularly designed for the treatment of SI dysfunction in children with ADD syndrome. The rehabilitation program consists of two parts, structured games for children and suggestions for parents and teachers. It is aimed for preschool and lower age primary school children. The games are very good for children with ADD because of their constant need for activity. This particular design of the rehabilitation program enables parents as well as teachers to more adequate approach to children with ADD who exhibit such SI problems, because while improving sensory integration the child learns to focus, pay attention, and control his/hers behaviors.
