Comparison between Complete Denture Wearers and Mini Implant Supported Mandibular Denture Wearers at the 5 Year Follow up Considering OHRQoL, Chewing Function and Bone Support
Aim: To examine denture wearers supported by mini dental implants (ICDWs) after 5-years of wearing. Materials and methods: Eighty nine patients (ICDWs) (39 males and 50 females, 52–83 years) with 4 mini dental implants (MDI) supporting mandibular complete denture (ball attachments) participated. Fifty two complete denture wearers (CDWs) (32 females. 20 males, 51–86 years) represented the control group. Clinical and x-ray examination were made by a specialist of prosthodontics. Participants completed the Oral Health Impact Questionnaire (OHIP) and the Chewing Function Questionnaire (CFQ) developed by the authors. Results: Only 19 implants were lost when loaded or during the first year. At least 3 MDIs remained for a support. The x-rays revealed satisfactory bone support. The worse OHRQoL and more chewing problems were found in the CDWs than in the ICDWs (p < 0.01). Conclusions: Mini dental implants were satisfactory improving OHRQoL and chewing function over a longer period of time.
