Reconstructing Memory, Deconstructing Oral Narratives: Dalmatian Refugees in Egypt during World War II
Oral history narratives often incorporate various perspectives of the same experience. However, this body of narratives when compared produces memory reconstruction of a single image with different perspectives. The aim of this report is to present and analyse several narratives of the World War II refugees that went at the end of 1943 from Dalmatia to Italy and on to Egypt. These narratives incorporate the memory of several stages (departure, sea voyage, Italian experience, Mediterranean Sea experience, life in the desert, encounters with "the others") that together create collective memory. The analysis would incorporate the production of the memory, shaping the process of narratives and the construction of collective memory.
