Transforming the organizational structure and culture to sustain long-term competitiveness

This paper deals with organizational structure and culture as elements of organizational design and their role in achieving long term competitive advantage of Croatian firms. Research results are consistent with similar studies and reveal that organizational culture is an underpinning element of organizational design that is deeply embedded in every aspect of organizational life. Organizational culture features that are statistically proven to differentiate among different levels of competitiveness are level of acceptance for organizational values by the employees, development of subcultures and supporting organizational changes as a part of organizational culture. Organizational culture values that are statistically proven to differentiate among different levels of competitiveness are openness, creativity, innovativeness and closedness. In terms of competitiveness the same has been proven for the following learning culture characteristics: continuous creation of new knowledge, knowledge investments and infrastructure for the mobility of ideas. Structural elements did not prove significant in the analysis, i.e. did not differentiate between different competitive positions. Results are discussed and recommendations for managers are given at the end of the paper.
