Farmed sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) in Eastern adriatic : seasonal and regional differences in parasitofauna
Annual production of European seabass together with gilthead seabream is around 6 000 tons. Due to lower sea temperatures in Adriatic, in contrast to the other parts of Mediterranean, European seabass is somewhat more abundant in Croatian fish farms. We investigated a total of 333 randomly sampled fish in three European seabass fish farms in East Adriatic Sea for ectoparasite analyses. Sampling sites were in south, central and north Adriatic in order to test differences between sampling sites. Sampling period was during spring and autumn from 2005 to 2010, and we also tested differences in between sampling seasons. Samples from skin and gills were microscopically analysed in situ. Further investigation of endoparasites was made macroscopically during necropsy. Although some of parasites had high prevalence (Diplectanum spp.), economical loss wasn’t detected. Investigated European seabass farms showed very good state in terms of parasitological analysis. Differences between sampling sites were not statistically significant as opposed to differences in sampling seasons.
