Seed orchads in Croatia
In 1962 Professor M. Vidakovic initiated work on establishing seed orchads in Croatia. Tree selection, vegetative propagation and seed orchard establishment were carried out by the experts of at the Forest Research Institute from 1965 to 1971. Species selection was based on the priorities of Croatian forestry and afforestation needs. Initial emphasis was on conifers. Over the last 30 years 203 seed objects out of 20 autochtonous and 14 allochtonous species on 5030 ha were chosen by large-scale selection. The first species included was European larch, Larix decidua Mill., followed by Weymouth pine, Pinus strobus L., Scots pine, Pinus sylvestris L., Austrian pine, Pinus nigra Arn. and Douglas fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco, so that now 14,2 ha of orchads are managed by the Forest Research Institute. In addition, seed orchads have also been established for the following decidouous species: common oak, Quercus robur L., small-leafed lime, Tilia cordata Mill., common alder, Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn and narrow leaf ash, Fraxinus angustifolia Vahl.
