Injuries and deaths in vehicle occupants

Injuries and fatalities occur in all forms of transportation. However, road traffic accidents account for thr great majoriti of those casualities. In the Western world, they are the leading cause of death in the age group below 45 years. The extent and the pattern of injuries sustained will depend upon the role that injured person played in the accident, three main groups being pedestrians, cyclists and vehicle occupants including drivers. This paper presents an overview of what happens with the human body in the car, together with the review of typical injuries to the occupants with pertaining mechanisms of their appearance. The special emphasize is on autopsy procedure and its specificities when dealing with road traffic death.
