New approach in drug delivery systems
Drug delivery systems have become important tools for the specific delivery of a large number of drug molecules. Effective intracellular drug delivery is important for therapeutic agents which have specific molecular targets inside a cell. To achieve efficient delivery of therapeutics, different nanomaterials have been developed that consider the diverse physiochemical nature of therapeutics, such as size of molecules, water soluble or insoluble. Moreover, these systems need to overcome the various membrane associated and intracellular barriers to efficiently deliver and retain therapeutics in the particular compartment and active form. In recent years a cell penetrating peptides have been explored to overcome cell membrane barrier. These peptides can ferry molecules or colloidal drug carrier systems that are tagged to them across the cell membrane, into the cytoplasm and to the nucleus. The present review discusses the various aspects of the efficient drug delivery systems.
