Thermal and morphological properties of Spartium junceum fiber-reinforced green composites

The composites investigated in this paper were PLA (polylactide acid polymer) and polypropylene reinforced with Spanish broom (Spartium junceum L.) fibres. Thermal properties of composite materials were tested by micro scale combustion calorimetry (MCC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) while morphological properties of fractured surfaces after tensile strength testing were determined by Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The aim of this research was to develop renewable composite material with good thermal and mechanical properties. MCC revealed advantages of the application of PLA rather than PP matrix while Spartium junceum proved to be valuable for the reinforcement of PLA polymer.
