Implications of Population Age Structure on the Socio-Economic Development of Rural Areas
This paper deals with spatial analysis of the age structure of the population in Croatian region of Hrvatsko zagorje between the census period 2001-2011. The first part of the paper analyses the achieved degree of population ageing in Zagorje's rural and urban settlements, using several demographic indicators such as population age structure, youth coefficient, ageing index and etc. The second part presents a typology of settlements by size and types of ageing. The results show that although the intensity of ageing differs from area to area, the whole region of Hrvatsko zagorje has an unfavorable age structure of population. This negative tendency is especially prevalent in rural areas where most villages are characterized by oldness. The consequence of this is the economical and social set-back of Zagorje's rural areas.
