Policies for Cultural Labour? Employment in Cultural Industries in Croatia
The article gives an overview on employment in cultural industries in Croatia. After outlining key concepts of cultural labour in cultural industries, the author presents the context of cultural industrialization in the region of Southeastern Europe that is relevant for the presentation of Croatian case. The relevant statistical data on paid employment in cultural industries is presented that shows decrease of employment in legal entities in selected cultural activities of cultural industries in the period 2008-2011. As one of the actors working in cultural industries on freelance (‘atypical’) basis, the status of freelance artists is also presented. Special cultural policy provisions are elaborated and data provided, which shows the decrease of funding for freelance artists and parallel decrease in their number in the same period. The article shows how recession has taken its toll on employment in cultural industries in Croatia, and how there are limited policy provisions for this field.
