Dose distribution measurement for X-ray examinations of the paranasal sinuses using a child phantom

The knowledge of absorbed doses in tissues is extremely important in radiological department. Many years our investigations were focused on dose measurements in X-ray diagnostic in order to assure the best possible quality for our patients. The doses during the X-ray examination of paranasal sinuses (PNS) depending on the performing technician were also studied. The aim of this work is to calculate the relative doses for the thyroid and the eyes during the same examination. Therefore the absorbed doses on and in the CIRS phantom (10 years old child) were measured in the position of the organs investigated. For dose measurements two kind of dosimetry systems – RPL (GD-352M) and TL (LiF:Mg, Cu, P) dosimeters were used. The dosimeters were placed in the exact organ position according to normal anatomy. The doses were measured in 10 expositions with each dosimetry system. The led apron was attached on the neck area to imitate every day work and conditions. The mean value of the doses for the thyroid gland were 0.20 ± 0.05 mSv and for the eyes 0.32 ± 0.02 mSv in 10 expositions. The relative doses were calculated in relation with the entrance dose which was 9.69 mSv for 10 expositions. The calculated relative doses were 0.02 for the thyroid gland and 0.03 for the eyes. Compared to our previous work the mean entrance doses are in good relation with our previous investigation. The calculated relative doses from phantom measurements enable the determination of the organ doses for the eyes and the thyroid gland on patients.
