Effect of the Earthquake Type on Response of Some Concrete and Masonry Structures
Defining the most unfavourable types of earthquakes for different structures is still not sufficiently reliable. In this article different types of earthquakes with same maximum acceleration, but different predominant period and time duration, were considered. The influence of several different types of earthquakes on the response of a concrete frame, a concrete wall and a confined masonry wall was investigated using a previously developed numerical model for both static and dynamic analysis of reinforced concrete and masonry structures [1, 2]. The developed models capture the most important nonlinear effects of concrete, reinforcement and masonry, as well as large displacements. The longitudinal acceleration component of the six adopted different types of earthquakes, as well as the longitudinal resonant harmonic base acceleration, was considered. All dynamic excitations were scaled to equal maximum base acceleration of 0.3 g. Depending of the structural characteristics, the most unfavourable types of earthquakes were presented in conclusions.
