Coagulation Factors, Clot Formation and Atherothrombosis
Strategy of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease has significantly advanced during the past twenty years. However, prevalence of the atherothrombosis is still high and in order to explain its pathogenesis and improve treatment new risk factors are under intensive investigation. Perturbation of hemostasis is central to the pathogenesis of all thrombosis and there is evidence that haemostatic factors are associated with increased risk of atherothrombosis. Consequence of the atherosclerotic plaque erosion or rupture is fibrin clot formation. Its structure/function is complex and could be modified by both genetic and environmental determinants. Fibri(noge)n made structural network and clot frame while its lyses is the main task of fibrinolytic therapy. In this review we are going to discuss factors involved in fibrin clot formation and their relation to atherothrombosis.
