Bone morphogenetic proteins: First European Conference, Zagreb, Croatia, October 7-11, 1998

The First European Conference on Bone Morphogenetic Proteins was organized by the Croatian Calcified Tissue Society, Croatian Society for Human Genetics and School of Medicine, University of Zagreb and was held in Zagreb, Croatia, October 7-11, 1998. More than 240 basic scientists and clinical practitioners from 30 countries attended the meeting. Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are growth and differentiation factors originally isolated from bovine bone based on their ability to induce new bone formation in vivo and form a large subgroup of the TGF-beta superfamily of proteins. BMPs are capable of restoring lost bone in post-fetal life by recapitulating the cellular events that are involved in the formation of bone during embryonic development. Recent demonstration that BMPs regenerate bone in humans and are also capable of regenerating other tissues, like periodontium, in animal models, suggests that the specific biological action of BMPs is determined by responding cells and the microenvironment available at the site of injury. This Editorial will summarize the preclinical studies and several potential clinical applications of BMPs presented at the conference, in particular, clinical results on the activity of BMPs in regenerating bone in humans.
