Integration of Renewables and Water Supply: the Case of Jordan
Jordan is country characterised with arid to semi-arid climate, short rainy seasons, high dependence on the import of fossil fuels and with increasing gap between water supply and demand. In order to decrease high dependence on the imported fossil fuels the utilisation of renewable energy sources is the most promising solution. However, high penetration of the intermittent renewable energy sources into the energy systems without energy storage is not possible. On the other hand in many places there is already an excellent storage potential in the local water supply system especially in the systems with desalination process which are high consumers of electricity. The paper shows model and results of analysis conducted in the EnergyPLAN model for the system which combines together desalination process and high share of intermittent renewable energy sources. Results of analysis have shown that it might be beneficial to integrate renewables and desalinisation process. Furthermore, water produced through desalination process can be sufficient for the agriculture needs in the country.
