Increasing productivity in forestry by applying new work methods
This paper elaborates concepts of productivity and work methods in forestry, relations between them, possibilities of achieving an increased work productivity. It is possible to implement various work methods in identical conditions. An increase in productivity can be achieved through an improved selection of established and verified work methods, or by exploring and implementing new, more efficient work methods. The most extensive forest operations and the most frequent work methods were used as the basic criteria in defining the object of research. The folloving areas were selected for research: (1) operations during felling, primary conversion and transport of wood in a mountain uneven-aged forest; (2) felling, primary conversion and wood skidding during thinning in an even-aged forest stand. Work methods were defined by: (a) allotment of work tasks among workers, (b) the way they worked and cooperated, (c) the equipment for performing work tasks, (d) the sorts of forest products and lokation of their manufacture. Efficiency of work was examined through comparative analysis of existing and new methods of fellings, primary conversion and transport of wood in a mountain unevenaged forest. In the process of thinning of an even-aged forest stand consisting of beech, sessile oak and hornbeam, the productivity of three different work methods was comparatively analysed. Productivity analysis encompasses different kinds of productivity indicators and ways of their determination and monitoring. It also includes a list of natural indicators of work productivity under given working conditions. Posibilities of increased work productivity related to motivation of forest workers, improvement of working conditions and of discovering new solutions, have been specifed.
